A model for the alternating phase lags associated with QPOs in X-ray binaries

چکیده
We present a theoretical model for the alternating phase lags associated with QPO fundamental and harmonic frequencies observed in some Galactic black-hole candidates. We assume that the accretion flow exhibits a transition from an outer cool, optically thick accretion disk to a hot, inner advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), and that the QPOs are related to small-scale oscillations of the accretion rate and the transition radius. We present an analytical estimate of the expected phase lags at the fundamental and first harmonic frequencies of the QPOs and perform detailed time-dependent Monte-Carlo simualtions of the radiation transport in the oscillating ADAF / cool disk system. We find that this model is well suited to reproduce alternating phase lags between the fundamental and the first harmonic. It also naturally explains the trend observed in GRS 1915+105 that, as the soft X-ray luminosity increases, the QPO frequency increases and the phase lag associated with the QPO fundamental frequency changes sign from positive to negative. The relation between the disk temperature and the QPO frequency observed in GRS 1915+105 is consistent with a secular instability modulating the disk evaporation at the transition radius. Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملA Resonance Model of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations of Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries
We try to understand the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in low-mass neutron-star and black-hole X-ray binaries by a resonance model in warped disks with precession. Our main concern is high-frequency QPOs, hectohertz QPOs, and horizontal-branch QPOs in the z sources and the atoll sources, and the correponding QPOs in black-hole X-ray binaries. Our resonance model can qualitatively, but syst...

I report the discovery of hard X-ray phase lags associated with the famous 67 Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in microquasar GRS 1915+105. The QPO is seen on multiple occasions. For this investigation, I have chosen one particular observation when the oscillation is the strongest. The measured hard lags show strong energy dependence. With respect to the 2-2.5 keV band, the phase lag increas...
متن کاملThe Relativistic Precession Model for Qpos in Low Mass X-ray Binaries
The relativistic precession model for quasi periodic oscillations, QPOs, in low mass X-ray binaries is reviewed. The behaviour of three simultaneous types of QPOs is well matched in terms of the fundamental frequencies for geodesic motion in the strong field of the accreting compact object for reasonable star masses and spin frequencies. The model ascribes the higher frequency kHz QPOs, the low...
متن کاملA Model for Twin Kilohertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binaries
We suggest a plausible interpretation for the twin kiloHertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. We identify the upper kHz QPO frequencies to be the rotational frequency and the lower kHz QPOs the standing kink modes of loop oscillations at the inner edge of the accretion disk, respectively. Taking into account the interaction between the neutron star...
